Turkey (Saray)
15,000 inhabitants of the Saray Municipality in Ankara, Turkey, are now enjoying safe drinking water provided by the new pipeline.
SARAY – Water Supply and Usage Improvement Project
The Saray Municipality is situated in the Çubuk Plateau, next to Ankara, and has a total of 15,000 inhabitants. The main supply pipeline of the Saray Municipality was 25 years old and in disrepair. Due to its old age and fragile structure, the pipeline fractured and leaked frequently, leaving residents without water and increasing the possibility of contamination. The residents could only access clean water through drinking fountains and water reservoirs. Due to the limited budget of the municipality, there were no plans to replace the pipeline.
The Water Supply and Usage Improvement Project was designed to make necessary technical improvements including the replacement of the ageing pipeline with a food grade ductile one in September 2008.
What is the objective?
The intervention areas of this project are improved access to safe drinking water, advocacy and communication.
The objective is to replace the old pipeline with a food grade Poly Ethylene (PE) pipeline, hereby saving significant amounts of water and eliminating the risk of contamination and other health risks. The storage tank conditions are also to be improved. In conjunction with a new pipeline, an outreach and awareness campaigncentered on the theme of water conservation and wise use of water in schools and hostels will be organized.
